Hi Zeb, I couldn't agree more, some of the best photos I've taken have been in 'bad' weather. And living in the UK I do get a lot of rain!

Hi there Zeb - nice to meet you! (insert handshake...) I'm one of your contacts on Flickr, and I found a link to your site in your profile.

I love your attitude on the film vs. digital argument. I'm opposite of you in that I've worked very little outside of digital as opposed to film. However, while comparing film vs. digital I see how both formats have benefits and limitations that can deeply influence the results.

I've been planning on working more with film recently, and your pinhole photos really inspire me to experiment with that medium - the beautiful, rich colors contrasted with the softness, and your ability to capture movement have me quite captivated. Thanks so much for sharing - I'll be back to peruse your images again soon!

Yours,

Jake Catlett

OK, I will be the only one so far to respond. May I first say I am a professional photographer living in Australia.

May I also say bravo! I have the same issues within this industry, it isn't limited to landscape photography. It is also an issue amongst the portrait, commercial, wedding etc etc photographers.

There is a paranoia amongst photographers about sharing information period. I find it very frustrating and obnoxious. No two photographers can take the same photograph just as no two artists paint a face identically. Each person has their own style. No two are the same. By withholding information from others you also withhold it from yourself.

"By learning you will teach, by teaching you will learn."

But here is my biggest frustration within the industry, I don't know if this is an issue pertaining to our own countries or a general one. It is the attitude of street photographers who believe they then have the right to photograph anyone on the street and then publish the image without gaining permission. I believe in your country it is legal to do that, but here it is protected by the privacy act (but only to the point that it may damage a persons reputation, but say in the instance of a battered wife trying to start a new life it may be too late). On one hand photographers guard their privacy and knowledge believing they have every right to it, yet defend the right passionately to publish images of the public without their permission. People have many reasons not to have their image made public, far more important than making a landscape spot public.

It's just good manners.

very well told, zeb. It seems that a lot of people have no time for the telling of a good story; they want it in two lines or less; which as a storyteller, I find disconcerting to say the least...your website is very good (in my limited experience) but hey, this is your mom and I can praise you all I want, right! And yes, if your pinhole camera could talk, what tales would we hear?? Keep 'em rolling.

Mel Curtis sent me. I did some pinhole work in the 80s with 8x10 film. I do enjoy your food for thought. This is a large photographic download, but a good and thoughtful one. I admire those who endeavor to explain the physics of exposure well, because one can not escape getting the spirit of photography as well. An unholy alliance of Science and Art. Well done!

I wish you ran a class that I could attend.
I am a little lost and could do with some guidance.
I know I need to keep going though the literature and practicing until understand it.
Thanks for posting this on your website though.
Im going to keep running through it. Along with the F stops and shuter speeds.
